{"id":41,"date":"2007-01-16T11:19:43","date_gmt":"2007-01-16T15:19:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jrtwine.com\/blog\/?p=41"},"modified":"2008-03-31T17:25:35","modified_gmt":"2008-03-31T21:25:35","slug":"premature-optimization-may-not-be-premature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jrtwine.com\/blog\/premature-optimization-may-not-be-premature\/","title":{"rendered":"Premature Optimization may not be premature&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is an interesting thing I am noticing with younger developers &#8211; anytime someone mentions <em>optimization<\/em>, the first words out of their mouths is something about how how the optimization is <em>premature optimization<\/em>, and is only going to cause more harm than good.<\/p>\n<p>These developers lack a certain wisdom that comes with years of varied experience &#8211; once you have experienced something that <em>inefficient<\/em>, you know how to spot it in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Optimization is about simplicity.  Think about it &#8211; whenever something is considered optimal, it is usually simplified somewhat from its original incarnation.  An <em>optimized<\/em> interface is usually a <em>simplified<\/em> one.  Optimized code usually takes less steps to do something, and thus is usually less complex; hence &#8211; simplified.<\/p>\n<p>From the first Computer Science (or programming) class, the KISS philosophy is hammered in.  <strong>K<\/strong>eep <strong>I<\/strong>t <strong>S<\/strong>imple, <strong>S<\/strong>tupid.  The art of optimization is the ultimate application of the KISS philosophy.<\/p>\n<p>Never underestimate or disregard the benefit of simplification, of which is nothing but a better word for optimization.  Simple is easier to use, understand and modify in the future.
